The Spirit of Giving

Christmas is, at heart, a season of generosity. We give our time, our food, our presence — and, yes, our presents. But it isn’t just about what’s wrapped under the tree. For me, Christmas has always been about opening doors, sharing food, and making space at the table.

When I began pulling together the recipes for Stirring Stuff at Christmas, I knew I wanted the book to carry that spirit too. Cooking has always been my way of giving — whether it was teaching at the cookery school, filling the house with friends for birthday gatherings, or sending a tin of cheese straws to someone far away. This book feels like an extension of that.

That’s why I’ve decided that all proceeds from pre-orders, along with the first 50 sales, will be donated to James’ Place. The charity offers life-saving support to men in suicidal crisis, and it is very close to my heart. My late husband Adrian might have benefited from such help had we known of it then. Supporting James’ Place feels like a way to honour his memory, while helping others find light in their darkest hours.

So when you buy a copy of Stirring Stuff at Christmas, you’re not just buying a collection of festive recipes. You’re also joining in an act of giving — of hope, warmth and kindness, which seems exactly what this season is about.
